When should you use high beam headlights?

Using high beam headlights is appropriate in open country or rural areas with no oncoming traffic because these areas typically have less ambient light and fewer sources of illumination, such as streetlights or other vehicles. High beams provide increased visibility over a greater distance, allowing drivers to see more of the road ahead and identify potential hazards, such as animals crossing the road or obstacles.

In well-lit urban areas, using high beams can cause glare for other drivers and is not needed since streetlights provide sufficient illumination. Additionally, during inclement weather, such as rain or fog, low beam headlights are generally more effective because high beams can reflect off precipitation and create a blinding effect. In heavy traffic conditions, using high beams can also be hazardous, as they can blind other drivers.
